Modular chemical plants, as discussed in research and industry, have special requirements towards thermal separation equipment. This article sums up these requirements and presents one suitable category of microstructured devices. The development of these devices started in absorption before it was extended to distillation. Based on a mathematical model of the apparatus the hurdles on the way to use these devices in distillation operation, which are based on the temperature profile, are discussed and first technical solutions are suggested.
