Various material properties of solids are influenced by the particle morphology. Therefore, precise, rapid and inexpensive determination of the internal and external morphology of particles is of great interest. Measurement of the particle shapes was considerably simplified by combination of watershed and the active contour model. The technique is applicable to a variety of particle populations and allows the generation of a sufficient number of shapes for the static characterization of particles within a few hours.
