Photo-crosslinkable chitosan hydrogel as a bioadhesive for esophageal stents

Esophagealstents are clinically used as a therapy for dysphagia to mechanically open the esophageal passageway to allow nutritional intake and improve quality of life. However, migrantion of the stents within the esophagus is problematic, causing warious complications. Therfore, in this study, wesuggest a biocompatible chitosan conjugated with 4-azidobenzoic readily form an adhesive hydrogel upon UV illumination, which showed comparable work of adhesion to Carbopol 934P gel and improved adhesiveness between the surfaces of a silicone-covered stent and esophageal tissue.
