Post-Polymerization Electrochemical Functionalization of a Conducting Polymer - Anodic Cyanation of Poly(P-Dimethoxybenzene)

Anodic cyanation reactions of electroformed poly(p-dimethoxybenzene) and co[poly(p-dimethoxybenzene)+poly(3-methylthiophene)] films can be performed in CH3CN+0.2M NEt(4)CN at 1.2+/-0.1 V (vs. 10(-1) M Ag+/Ag). The electrochemical replacement of the aromatic methoxy group by nitrile is mainly supported by IR measurements (specific band nu(CN) at around 2200 cm(-1)).
