The growth of a big cluster at the expense of a small cluster is studied by computer simulations. Individual runs show large fluctuations in cluster size and a wide spread of the lifetime of the smaller cluster. These results are in line with experimental observations of the development of an individual cluster with the scanning tunneling microscope.
