Solvent Contribution to the Capacitance and Solvent Orientation at an Uncharged Electrode .1. Theoretical Aspects
The possibility of obtaining information on solvent orientation at the pzc from capacitance data is considered. The variation with the electrode charge of the solvent contribution to the capacitance C(s) is discussed on the basis of the behaviour of the contribution C(m) used to correct the inner layer capacitance C(i). The conditions that C(m) must obey in order to obtain a C(s) curve with a single maximum are shown to be very weak. The charge at which this maximum occurs is taken as the practical criterion for the discussion of the preferred orientation. A simple method for estimating this charge from C(i) data is proposed. The method is illustrated on dimethylsulfoxide solutions of inactive electrolytes with gallium, indium + gallium, mercury, bismuth and gold electrodes. The predictions of this method are found to be consistent with data from the literature.
