Removal of Amorphous Carbon from SiC Powder using Flotation
Impurities in SiC powders affect their properties greatly. This paper reports a method to remove amorphous carbon from SiC powders using dispersion and flotation. SiC and amorphous carbon particles were successfully separated using polyacrylamide (PEI) as dispersant in the SiC powders suspension. Then oleic acid was added as a flotation agent to gather the amorphous carbon which was finally removed. A new way to determine the amount of amorphous carbon content was put forward. In this way, 82wt% of the amorphous carbon particles were wiped out in 20wt% suspension when added to 1 wt% PEI and 0.3 wt% oleic acid.
