Effect of reactive impurities in propane-1,3-diol on properties of intermediate polyesterdiol and polyurethane elastomer
MeCH(OH)CH2OH or glycerol-contg. CH2(CH2OH)(2) (up to 2% by mass) was converted with adipic acid in presence of Ti(OCMe3)(4) catalyst to poly(trimethylene adipate) poly-esterdiol and then used for synthesis of polyurethane elastomers in reaction with CH2(CH2OH)(2) (chain extender) and cam. polyoxypropylenetriol in presence of SnBu2 dilaurate catalyst. The polyesterdiol was studied for m.p., hydroxyl no. and mol. mass whereas polyurethane for mech. properties, glass transition temp. and thermal decompn. The small amts. of impurities (below 1% by mass) contained in the polyesterdiol or in the chain extender did not deteriorate the mech. properties of the final polyurethanes.
