Electroosmosis can be conveniently used to assess the electrokinetic potential of granular matter compressed in a plug. The method is based on measuring the flux of the surrounding solution through a capillary tube. A procedure is described that accounts for the pressure drop across the capillary which, if neglected, may affect the results of the electroosmotic measurements.
