Analysis of Particle Motion in the Near-Wall Shear-Layer Vortices - Application to the Turbulent Deposition Process
The motions of aerosol particles in the near-wall coherent vortices of turbulent boundary layer flows are studied. These shear layer vortices are modeled based on the results of stability analyses of channel flows. The Stokes drag, the gravitational force, and the lift force are included in the equation of motion. The trajectories and the rebounds of particles in the modeled vortical flow field are analyzed, and the limiting trajectories for particle deposition are carefully identified. Based on the details of limiting trajectories and the rebound patterns, turbulent depositions of aerosol particles under various conditions are analyzed. The predicted deposition velocities including particle rebound effects are compared with the available experimental data for different surface conditions, and favorable agreements are observed.
