Dewetting Conditions for Ionic Liquid-Films - Novel Features of the Stability Diagram
Dewetting conditions formulated for charge-neutralized liquid films (Mitlin, V. S., J. Colloid interface Sci. 156, 491, 1993) are generalized for ionic liquid films. Free energy of the film, accounting for the van der Waals attraction, Born repulsion, electrostatic forces, and gravitation, is considered. It is shown that electrostatic contribution yields novel features in dewetting descriptions. Particularly for physically reasonable values of the parameters, the free energy may have a two-double-tangent form, which yields several thickness intervals of instability and metastability for the him. Film stability diagrams are presented. Analytical expressions for the lower boundaries of stability and metastability are obtained at large values of electrostatic force. The importance of metastable states in dewetting descriptions is emphasized.
