Formation of misoriented deformation microstructure is investigated in the framework of the incremental variational formulation of rigid-plastic approximation to crystal plasticity. Explicit minimization of an energy functional shows under which conditions the microstructure forms. Orientation and dislocation content of the corresponding boundaries are also determined by the analysis.
