Synthesis and characterization of Ni-Al intermetallics compounds with grain refinement emphasis
Characterization of NiAl in the thermal explosion mode of Self-Propagating High-Temperature Synthesis (SHS) was investigated. Al2O3 and TiO2 Particles were added to green body to obtain grain refinement. The titanium oxide showed better results. The combustion and ignition temperatures were estimated and the mechanical behavior of the products and its constitution was studied. After the synthesis, the samples were hot-rolled in order to reduce their porosity and increase its grain refinement. Optical and SEM, x-ray diffraction and EDS (X-Ray Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy), Vickers microhardness testing were used. Density, porosity and grain size were also quantified.
