Novel magnetic materials exhibiting soft magnetic properties, namely: amorphous (metallic glasses) and nanocrystalline magnets, the latter produced by devitrification of the parent metallic glass, are reviewed. Production methods, magnetic properties as well as applications of these materials are presented. A brief description of possible utilization of the reviewed materials in basic research is also given. Finally, the research trends in soft magnets are shortly described.
