The influence of substrate texture on the oxidation kinetics of copper
To understand the oxidation kinetics of copper and the influence of substrate texture on oxide growth, copper single crystals having different orientations were oxidized. The crystal faces (100), (110), (123), (314), (111) and (311) represent, in that order, decreasing rates of oxidation. The oxidation of the (100) single crystal was much higher than that of the others crystal substrates. It is therefore apparent that the {100} texture in copper should be avoided to reduce oxidation. A quantitative model was proposed to predict the oxidation kinetics of copper from the texture of substrate specimens. The experimental data obtained from the single crystals oxidation kinetics were used in this model. Reasonable agreement was obtained between the oxidation kinetics predicted by the model and the experiments.
