A study of NiTiNb shape-memory alloy pipe-joint with improved properties
In this paper, Ni-44Ti-9Nb shape memory alloy and its pipe joint were studied. In order to adjust the compositions and reduce the metallurgical temperature of Ni-Ti-Nb, intermediary Ni-Ti and Ni-Nb alloys by melting pure titanium, nickel and niobium were utilized. The experimental alloy was prepared in a cold crucible in a magnetic suspension furnace under controlled protective argon followed by quenching in an iron-mould. The result shows that it is a good way to control the composition precisely. The Ni-44Ti-9Nb alloy exhibits a wide hysteresis property. After 16% pre-deformation, the hysteresis width (A(s)-M-s) is 155degreesC and A(s)=35degreesC. The hydrostatic, tensile, torque, fatigue tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of the coupling with pipe joint made of the NiTiNb alloy. All the results indicated excellent properties of Ni-Ti-Nb shape memory alloy for pipe joint.
