Pressure effects on the magnetic and structural properties of layered manganites
We report on the effect of pressure on layered (La0.6Nd0.4)(1.2)Sr1.8Mn2O7 manganite. At pressures of about 1.9 GPa we observe an enhancement of magnetic and electronic interactions along the c axis. This enhancement is the result of the decrease in the inter-bilayer spacing and of the shift of the Mn atoms away from the center of each bilayer. The overall compressibility along the c axis is absorbed by a decrease in the inter-bilayer spacing while the distance between the apical oxygen atoms on the opposite sides of each bilayer remains almost unchanged.
