Strain measurements on geomaterials by neutron time-of-flight diffraction
In this paper we represent results of deformation experiments in combination with intracrystalline strain measurements of sandstones from the Elbezone (E-Germany) by the neutron time-of-flight method. The deformation experiments were performed with the deformation device EXSTRESS On the strain diffractometer EPSILON in channel 7A of the pulsed reactor IBR-2 in Dubna (Russia). Measuring strain as a function of applied stress the Young's modulus for quartz was determined to be (72.2 +/- 2.9) GPa. Furthermore, depth sensitive residual stress was measured after deformation in two radial directions on the investigated cylindrical sample. Different residual strain states were measured in the radial and perpendicular to each other directions, [x] and [y], determining the bedding plane of the sandstone. The results are compared with the published data from residual stress determinations using the central hole drilling (overcoming) method.
