Dispersion Polymerization of Styrene and Butyl Acrylate in Isopropanol/Water Media
Dispersion copolymerization of styrene and butyl acrylate in isopropanol/water media using poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) and 2,2''-azobis(isobutyronitrile) as the stabilizer and the initiator, respectively, was carried out to study the effects of monomr ratios, concentration of initiator, stabilizer, and isopropanol/water ratios on the polymerzation kinetics. The polymerization rate increased with increasing concentration of styrene in monomer mixture, initiator, stabilizer, water content in isopropanol/water dispersion media, and polymerization temperature, but decreased with monomer concentration. The average particle size of the latices increased with increasing concentration of butyl acrylate in monomer mixture, initiator, monomer, and polymerization temperature, but decreased with increasing concentration of stabilizer and water content in isopropanol/water dispersion media. In this study, poly(styrene-co-butyl acrylate)latices of 1∼2 ㎛ size range with narrow size distribution were prepared.
