Prediction of ignition hazard during turbulent gas mixing: a Lagrangian approach
The study presented in this paper exposes a general numerical method to assess both ignition and auto-ignition hazards in industrial flammable gas mixers. This method is based on a previous large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent mixing which provides the unsteady fields of velocity, pressure, temperature and chemical composition, and a Lagrangian tracking marker trajectory file. Then a statistical post-processing computation is performed to estimate the probability of ignition of the mixture by comparing the fuel molar fraction to flammability limits and the flow time scales to chemical delays provided by the CHEMKIN code. This method appears powerful for characterizing the safety of industrial mixers. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
