Mechanical Properties and Morphology of Polyamide-6/Polycarbonate (75/25) Blends with Reactive Compatibilizer
Mechanical properties and phase morphology of the blends of polyamide-6(PA-6) with polycarbonate (PC) containing various amounts of styrene-maleic anhydride (SMA) have been investigated. The content of PA-6 was fixed at 75% by weight to limit the number of variables in the examination of morphology and to ensure the continuous polyamide phase. PA-6/PC blends(75/25) without SMA copolymer as a compatibilizer has shown poor mechanical properties. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs of the blends compatibilized with SMA copolymer, revealed that PC particles were finely and uniformly dispersed in the PA-6 matrix, and the spherical PC particles in the compatibilized blends were much smaller than those of uncompatibilized blends. Mechanical properties of all the blends containing SMA coplymer were enhanced, which represents an improvement of interfacial adhesion. In particular, the optimum SMA content for the best mechanical properties was found to be in the vicinity of 10 phr.
