Mussel-inspired Engineering of an Anodized Aluminum Oxide Membrane
A thermosensitive membrane was prepared through mussel-inspired engineering of anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) membrane. Incorporation of catechol-functionalized copolymer having both 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) on AAO membrane provided stimuli-response to both temperature and pH. From the decrease of both water droplet contact angle and buffer solution transport rate above lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of copolymer, a "wettability"-controlled regulation mechanism of mass-transfer rate through engineered AAO membrane was proposed.
