Reactive Distillation for Multiple Reaction Systems
Reactive Distillation for Multiple Reaction Systems Reactive distillation (RD) is currently used to increase the reactant conversion in chemical equilibrium limited reaction systems that usually consist of a single main reaction. This work focuses on the application of RD to chemical systems that consist of more than a single main reaction. In such multiple reaction systems, not only the reactant conversion but also the selectivity of the target product is limited by chemical equilibrium. In this case, reactive distillation would allow overcoming such selectivity limitations, regardless of whether the target product is formed as an intermediate product or at the end of several consecutive reactions. Both cases are investigated on the example of the consecutive transesterification of dimethyl carbonate with ethanol. Comprehensive pilot-scale experiments were performed to study the effect of decisive operating parameters on the RD column's behavior.
