Study on fouling of ceramic membranes during microfiltration of yeast suspensions
The aq. suspension of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (yeast concn. 550 mg/kg) was microfiltered through a com. ceramic TiO2/Al2O3. membrane (cut-off 0.8 mu m) under lab. conditions (20 degrees C, transmembrane pressure 120-330 kPa, flow intensity 300-500 L/h, flow rate 2.73-4.55 m/s). To avoid fouling, the membrane was backflushed each 10 min with permeate (pressure 1.5 bar, washing time 60 s). The back-flushing resulted in an improvement of microfiltration efficiency of the membrane.
