The polymer-steel sandwich plate systems (SPS)
The polyurethane was prepd. from oligo(oxytetramethylene or oxypropylene or epsilon-caprolactone)diol (M = 1000, 2000, 1000) and 4,4' -methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate), with butylene glycol as chain extender and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane as catalyst. Mechanical properties (ASTM C 393-94) were detd. for 3-mm Polish. St3 steel-polyurethane-3-mm steel SPS, 220x50x22 mm in size. The St3 was pretreated (sand, air, hexane), coated with bonding agent (epoxide agent, US Royal's Thixon 405, or none), and heated 24 hr at 110 degrees C. The SPS was molded for 20 min, released, and heated (24 hr, 110 degrees C). The no-bonding agent sanded-St3 SPS was best, with a shear modulus (G) of 97.6 MPa. The epoxide-coated SPS required only 4.2 kN (min.) to be destroyed. In mech. terms, bonding agent was useless. The epoxide improved adhesion of the metal plate to the cast polyurethane elastomer.
