The effect of an organic diluent and solvent on the stability of water dispersions of poly(vinyl chloride) plastisol
Sedimentation stability was studied in a (100:120 g) PVC-plastiller plastisol deaerated (72 hrs., 22 degrees C, 6.5 Pa) and mixed, 10 g/l mL, with a nonpolar org. diluent or solvent and with 50 mL H2O contg. a surfactant (10%, compn. wt. basis), and dispersed 25 min in a lab. homogenizer. Toluene, xylene, nBuOAc, and BuOH were used as diluents, cyclohexanone as solvent, diBu sebacate or phthalate, and di(2-ethyihexyl) phthalate as plastifiers, and ethoxylated (n = 4-33) alcs. (lauryl), acids (stearic), amines, adducts etc. as nonionic and anionic surfactants, 15 in total. The org. solvent or the diluent increased the dispersing performance, reduced the plastisol particle size, and raised the Huggins const.
