Recycling of glass-reinforced polyester laminates
Waste glass-reinforced polyester laminates were comminuted to < 4 mm, glass fibers 32% in a < 0.5-mm (fraction amt 350/6) and 47% in a > 2.5-mm fraction (fraction amt. 43.2016). av. glass content 42%., and compressed with fly-ash microspheres, 18-35%, added to minimize the share of a polyester resin, 15-30% (used as binder), for 2 hrs./80 degrees C into 220 x 350 x 10-mm light core plates. The plates contg. recyclate 55, microspheres 18, and resin 27% had d. 1.71 g/cm(3), bending strength 23 MPa (25% better than standard), and bending modulus 4476 MPa. The plate's compression strength was only slightly lower than that of a standard laminate. The other compns. were inferior Also the standard formulation of polymer concrete viz., quartz flour 14, sand 30, gravel 44, and polyester resin 120% was modilled by adding 5%, or by substituting 3-5%, recyclate for quartz flour The resulting polymeric concretes had bending strengths higher by 12-25% and compression strength lower by 4-55%. The addh of the recyclate was optimum at 5%, the best was 2 or 5% quartz flour replaced by 2% of 2-2.5-mm or 5% of > 4-mm recyclate fraction.
