The interfacial tension and phase inversion in the water-gasoline system modified with selected oxygen compounds
Hydrophilics (MeOH, EtOH, 2-propanol, 2-methyl-2-propanol, BuOH, and tert-butyl methyl ether) and surfactants (Na bis(2-ethythexyl)sulfosuccinate (I), Ca dodecylbenzenesulfonate (II), and branched primary alkylamines (12-14 and 16-22 C atoms)) were added to a H2O/gasoline system and changes in interfacial properties were detd.. Gasoline was: n-paraffins 8, isoparaffins 40, olefins 11.3, naphthenes 7.7, and aromatics 33 vol%. With 0.15M l in the org. phase, the interfacial tension fell to 2 mN/m; crit. micelle concn. was 0.13 mol/l. With 0.1M NaCl in the aq. phase, phase inversion occurred in the H2O/gasoline system contg I and II. The alkylamines raised the tension. in this system Their hydrophobic nature had little, if any, effect on the inversion. The shorter amine at a low concn. allowed the inversion. Hydrophilics shifted the inversion toward lower II concns.
