The process for making butyl butyrate from butyraldehyde
The Tishchenko condensation (ester dimerization of aldehydes) of butyraldehyde at 25-35 degreesC is presented. It includes the Al tributoxide catalyst synthesis and prepn. steps, synthesis of Bu butyrate, and a batch distn. of the reaction mixt. to remove the unconverted aldehyde at 400 hPa and to collect Bu butyrate + residual BuOH at 133 hPa, and a pure Bu butyrate product at 100 hPa in 91.4% yield. The catalyst prepn. and the Bu butyrate synthesis operating parameters are specified. A Sankey-type diagram visualizes the material balance. To make it cont., the process would require a cascade of reactors and two rectification columns.
