Chemical modification of glucose with chlorohydroxy aliphatics
Dry glucose, 0.36 mole, was condensed (3 h, 70degreesC, until no solid glucose remained) with 1.8 mole 2-chloroethanol or 3-chloro-1-propanediol over 13.8 g dry Amberlyst 131 to yield a (7:1) mixt. of alpha, beta isomeric chloroalkylglucoside oligomers in 68.9% yield. This was distilled at <90&DEG;/2 mm, washed with acetone, and heated in N-2 to remove the solvent. The products were examd. by GPC and C-13-NMR.
