The use of sorption in the production of pure-grade noble metals
Thiourea-crosslinked polystyrene (Purolite's S 920) sorbed 99.83% of Pt and 2.45% of Cu from a solution (left after removal of Cu from anode slimes in the electrorefining of Ag) contg. Pt 0.61, Cu 31.0, Se 1.65, and Te 1.25 g/L. From aq. solutions, >10 g Pt/L, the S 920 collected similar to15% Pt (resin wt. basis) in nearly 100% yield, total sorption capacity 0.07320 g Pt/g S 920. (NH2)(2)CS was effective as eluent The S 920 sorption capacities followed the type: Au>Pd>Pt>Rh. The eluates contained max. 5 mg metal/L and could be disposed off. Burning and calcining of the loaded resin gave >90% metal concentrates to be recycled or marketed. A com. procedure used to process an industrial Pt-Pd collective concentrate, separated Au, Pt, Pd and Rh, each 99.99% pure, in overall 96% yield.
