The aim of the paper is to determine the priority research areas involving chemistry, being the element of the state strategic policy in the conditions of changes in the political system and Poland's accession to the European Union. The paper is based on the document "The Mission of Chemistry" prepared by the Chemistry Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences and indicating the key role of chemistry in finding global solutions to problems in other fields of science and technology aimed at sustainable development of modern civilization.
