The four start-up periods of the Polish chemical economy (1790-1823, 1920-1939, 1945-1960, and the 1990s) were confronted and their (dis)similarities pointed out and discussed with a view to establishing the rational development pathways for the in-transition economy and particularly for the chemical industry under the conditions of encroaching privatization of industrial sectors, internationalization of property, and globalization of economy.
