Membrane separation of ethylene glycol from sodium bicarbonate in aqueous solutions
Aq. 1.7-1.9% glycol solutions containing 3780-5190 mg NaHCO3/L, pH 10.1-10.2, ChOD 22.8-25.7 g O-2/L, were nanofiltered through a preselected Osmonics' Desal 11 DK composite membrane (313 K, 15 atm) to find the DK to permeate 1.7 L/(m(2).h.atm) and to retain 8.8% of glycol (R-g) and 90.2% of bicarbonate (R-8). Semitechnical studies at 313 K on the DK separation of glycol from industrial 1.0% glycol wastes containing 8-12 g NaHCO3/L, involving prefiltration through 25, 5 and I-pm filters arranged in series and a three-stage nanofiltration (crude flux, 1.5-3.5 m(3)/h) with recirculation of retentate, gave R-g = 4.9-5.3% and R-s = 88-94%.(0.2 and 70 g NaHCO3/L in permeate and retentate, resp.).
