Identification of polymeric dispersions based on light scattering data
Multivariate data analysis techniques (chemometrics) were applied to light scattering data for polymeric dispersions. It was shown that latexes can be identified and classified as part of a certain product family based on their particle size distributions. in mixtures of different latexes, the blend composition can be obtained with an accuracy in the percent range by applying a multivariate calibration model to the corresponding particle size distributions. A simple instrument with light detection at four scattering angles in combination with chemometric data analysis was utilized to verify deviations of particle size distributions of certain samples from the average for a set of latexes without the need actually to measure the particle size distribution itself Thus, the instrument can be used for rapid quality assurance and control in a plant.
