A number of polycyclic 1,2,3-thialanes were synthesized via the reaction of norbornenes with elemental sulfur in the presence of catalytic amounts of amines, imines, or triazoles. It was found that the trithiatricyclodecanes synthesized possess antiwear and extreme-pressure properties and are useful as high-performance additives for lubricating oils.
