Adhesive Contact: A Few Comments on Cohesive Zone Models and Self-Consistency
The use of cohesive zone models in the context of the adhesive contact of spheres is discussed. An alternative derivation of the double Hertz cohesive zone model is proposed other than the one by Greenwood and Johnson [10]. Based on this example, and the derivation method used, some features of adhesive contact models, are discussed with emphasis on the role of the additional, physically motivated, lengthscale introduced by the cohesive zone.
