Estimation of separation efficiencies of aerosol particles in the upper parts of a human respiratory tract
CFD simulations and experimental studies were done for the anatomical cast of human oro-pharynx in order to estimate local efficiency of separation of inhaled aerosol particles in this region of the respiratory system. The analysis was done for two realistic, sinusoidal-type breathing curves. The results indicate that a substantial fraction of inhaled particles is eliminated from the aerosol stream in the oropharynx, depending on initial particle size distribution and breathing conditions. Some discrepancies between computational and experimental results are explained.
