As the preliminary works for the preparation of exfoliated nanocomposites by reactive extrusion (REX), the modified anionic polymerization was investigated. In this study, the Nylon 6 / clay (Na+-MMT) nanocomposites were prepared in a flask using an ε-caprolactam, catalyst, initiator, and clay. Since the anionic polymerization of ε-caprolactam is very sensitive to moisture, all materials were dried before use and then the polymerization was carried out under nitrogen atmosphere. Nanocomposites, exhibit an exfoliated structure, were prepared by varying the polymerization methods, which were verified with clay addition time. Exfoliation mechanism of clay layers was investigated by measuring the WAXD peaks of clay with polymerization. In the preparation of nanocomposites, the molecular weight (Mw) of Nylon 6 was affected by the clay content. From the mechanical and rheological measurements, the improved properties were obtained in comparison to the neat nylon 6, but these properties were also affected by the molecular weight. |
