Due to its specificity-selectivity and intrinsic biocompatibility, nucleic acids have been recognized as a generic biopolymer for new structural nanostructures including cubic, polyhedral, and even origami. Nucleic acids termed as a Nature-friendly brick-and-mortar have been further developed for several academic issues ranging from Nanotechnology to Medicine. Here, I will present novel nucleic acids engineering materials and their medical applications; DNA hydrogel for islet transplantation and cancer immunotherapy, DNA dendrimer as a nanodiagnostic tool for multiplexed pathogen detection, and protein producing DNA platform for a therapeutic protein amplification. In near future, nucleic acids engineering with unique characteristics (i.e., facile anisotropic design and precise nanoscaled self-assembly) may be a primary substitute for traditional in-use polymers, thus renovating new paradigm of polymeric sciences and engineering. |
