Spectroscopic Study on the Molecular Architecture of the Nylon 6 and Nylon 66/Clay Hybrid Nanocomposites |

Nylon 6/Clay nanocomposites obtained from surface-treated montmorillonite clay have unexpectively high property enhancements at low clay contents(1~5wt%). The improved properties must result from interactions between high surface area clay particles and the polymer. But these interactions are not well understood on the molecular level. In this study, we have prepared Nyon 6 and Nyon 66 nanocomposites with various modified clay such as dimethyl bis(hydrogenated-tallow)ammonium MMT(15A) and bis(2-hydroxy-ethyl)methyl tallow ammonium MMT(30B). Also we could confirm that only 30B-MMT is intercalated in both Nylon 6 and Nyon 66 through XRD. Then we could observe the nature of the Brill-transition in Nylon 6 and Nylon 66 by temparature-controlled FT-IR experiment. We analized these samples by using spectroscopic methods such as solid-state NMR and FT-IR to understand the different motion between intercalated nanocomposite and unintercalated nanocomposites.
