Structural Deformation Phenomenon of Synthesized Poly(isosorbide-1,4-cyclohexane dicarboxylate) in Hot Water |

Previously synthesized poly(isosorbide 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate) (PICD) have overcome synthetic problem associated with less reactive isosorbide by utilizing acetic anhydride for in-situ acetylation. This amorphous polymer, however, exhibits unusual behavior when submerged in 100 ˚C of water. Severe deformation occurs where cylindrical pellet changes into disk-like morphology which seems to share similar phenomenon of solvent induced crystallization. The influence of water medium on the thermal behavior of PICD was analyzed resulting analogous mechanism of solvent induced crystallization where the solvent function as plasticizer. Also the effect of acetic anhydride and open-ring ISB to structural deformation was investigated revealing ester hydrolysis. Solid state CPMAS 13C-NMR was used eliciting rearrangement or packing of carbons within PICD structure. |
