It has been well-known that comb-like polymers with fluoroalkyl side groups have the potential for obtaining materials with very low surface energy. In an effort to make a new low surface energy materials, we designed and synthesized new fluoropolymers, poly[oxy[[2-(perfluoroalkyl)ethyl]sulfonylmethyl]ethylene]s, which contains hydrophilic oxyethylene backborn, hydrophilic sulfone spacer, and hydrophobic fluoroalkyl side groups. From the thorough investigations using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and dynamic contact angle measurement, it was confirmed that these polymers formed ordered structures and relatively high water advancing contact angle compared with other polymers containing similar fluorine side chain length. It is possibly due to strong dipole moments and phase separation between hydrophilic backborn and hydrophobic side chains. |
