This study investigated the combustion properties of cypress specimen for the constructional interiors, especially focusing on smoke performance index and smoke growth index which are smoke parameters in fire scenarios. Smoke hazard properties were measured by using a cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1). The external heat flux was maintained at 50 kW/m2. A boron/silicon sol synthesized from boric acid and tetraethoxysilicate was used as a flame retardant. It was mixed with zinc borate and talc. The smoke performance index (SPI) of the specimens coated with the SiOB sol, talc/SiOB and ZB/talc/SiOB mixture were increased by each 2.4, 1.3 and 1.2 times, compared with uncoated specimen. The smoke growth index (SGI) decreased by 47% to 97% compared with uncoated specimen. The smoke intensity (SI) of SiOB compounds were obtained to be 40% to 62% lower than that of uncoated specimens, resulting in lower smoke and smoke hazards. |
