High Temperature Membrane using Poly(dimethyl siloxane) and 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane for PEMFCs |

Poly(dimethyl siloxane)(PDMS) has been widely used in various applications due to thermal, chemical stabilities and low price and reactive end groups, played a role as a linker to connect between sol-gel derived conducting compounds. It would drive phase separation and result in forming the proton conducting channels. PDMS was reacted with APTES in toluene by sol-gel reaction. Then POCl3 was added to this solution to bestow ionic conductivity on PDMS. And the viscous product was cast on the mylar film with Dr. blade. The phase separation between hydrophobic PDMS and hydrophilic phosphorous groups would form the proton conducting channels in the membrane. In the temperature ranges from 25 ℃ ~ 140 ℃, a nanoporous membrane showed high proton conductivity which was comparable with maximum conductivity of a Nafion. It could be used for a medium and high temperature proton conducting membrane at low humid conditions due to conducting mechanism of phosphorous groups at these conditions. |
