LC-Aligning Properties of Novel Polyimide from 2, 2'-Dihydroxy-3, 3', 4, 4'-Benzophenonetetracarboxylic Dianhydride Derivatives |

In the present study, we first describe a synthetic route to novel 2,2'-dihydroxy-3,3', 4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic anhydride and its behavior of polycondensation with conventional aromatic diamines. Then the two hydroxy groups residing on each base unit of BDHAN-ODA-PI was etherified with 4-[N-ethyl-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)amino-4'-nitroazobenzene] (DR1). Appendance of DR1 unit onto BDHAN-ODA-PI was successfully accomplished by way of the Mitsunobu conditions reaction. Chemical structures and degree of substitution of the modified new PIs was determined spectroscopically. Since DR1 itself is nonlinear optical materials, the new BDHAN-ODA-PI-DR was expected to show quite strong interaction with liquid crystal molecules for applying to TFT-LCD devices, and its thin rubbed films were prepared and their LC aligning abilities were investigated in terms of the pretilt angles. |
