Local Anti-biotic Delivery System for the Treatment of Osteomyelitis |

Osteomyelitis is a bone infection by microorganism that causes bone damage. Antibiotic-loaded polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) beads have been commonly adapted to treat the osteomyelitis as a local delivery system. However, the short-term (< 2 wks) and partial (< 20 % of total antibiotic dose) release from the PMMA beads still remained as critical limitations in clinical field. In this study, we developed a hydrophilized PMMA matrix to continuous and long-term release of an antibiotic, and thus can be an ideal system for the treatment of osteomyelitis. Its drug release behavior, mechanical properties, cytotoxicity, and anti-bacterial effect were investigated. In vivo animal study to investigate its therapeutic effect for the osteomyelitis was also conducted using a rat model (femur osteomyelitis). |
