We present a study on a semipermeable membrane (SPM) material used in producing photobioreactors (PBRs) for cultivating microalgaes. In the PBRs, high nitrate ion permeability and strength of SPM are needed to efficiently cultivate microalgaes. In order to improve this property, we designed a new concept, 'fabric-hydrogel composite membranes (FHCMs)'. FHCMs consist of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), poly(ethyleneglycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) and cotton fabric for reinforcing framework of hydrogel. With this concept of FHCM, we achived high permeability of nitrate ion that is increased to 1.2 × 10-8 m2 min-1 compared to that of commercialized SPM (3.3 × 10-9 m2 min-1) and the superior mechanical strength that is able to endure in marine condition. These FHCMs may be applied in the microalgaes cultivation by maintaining appropriate nitrate ion concentration and pH level. |
