The cavities of α-cyclodextrin(α—CD)/epichlorohydrin polymer can accommodate different small hydrophobic drugs due to the molecular recognition of α-CD, a photoresponsive competitive guest, azobenzene-substituted poly(acrylic acid)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(acrylic acid) (PAA-PEG-PAA) was introduced into this system, the azobenzene moieties expulsed the drug molecules, leading a disruption of association between the drug molecules and α-CD and a gel formation due to the high association constant of azobenzene moieties with α-CD. This gel ternary system can undergo photoresponsive transition using photoisomerization of azobenzene moieties. When the gel ternary mixture is irradiated with UV light, the mixture is gradually converted to a sol. When the sol ternary mixture is irradiated with visible light, the mixture is gradually converted back to a gel. In this study, the dynamics of the gel-sol transition of the ternary mixture, and the release of small drugs were investigated. |
