Visualization of Phase Behavior of Freestanding, Planar, and Asymmetric Lipid Bilayer |

Asymmetry of outer and inner leaflet is important feature of cell membrane because it relates to fundamental biological processes. In this work, we made freestanding and planar lipid bilayer that has hundreds of micrometers in dimeter by lipid-in method. We developed the shoring structure made by 3D printing for stable bilayer formation. We found that asymmetric bilayers had different phase behavior depending on lipid composition and temperature compared to symmetric bilayer. Moreover, we understood the effect of asymmetry on domain size and verified its thermodynamics by Landau model. |
